The announcement of the Pantone color of the year is a big event if you have anything to do with any kind of design. As a graphic designer, I’ve always been extremely and emotionally motivated by color. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Pantone, here’s a little background.
In 1963, Lawrence Herbert, Pantone’s founder, created a system for identifying, matching and communicating colors to solve the problems associated with producing accurate color matches in the graphic arts community.
Everyone’s eyes see colors differently. Combine that with the differences in resolution of your computer monitor, and you end up with many different shades of the same color, that end up not matching when you go to produce graphic artwork, fabric, paint, etc.
So Pantone’s matching system assigns a sort of recipe or formula to each color so that your Emerald ends up matching my Emerald.
Now that they are known as the global experts on color, they are also involved in forecasting color trends, which affect the fashion industry in a huge way. So count on seeing lots of emerald green in the stores this spring.
